This is a timeline for the Mario games, as well as its various spinoffs and crossovers. Credit to Prizm95 for laying the groundworks for this timeline, though I do have a few things on it that I wish to change, as well as add to. His video on the topic can be found here. This timeline is a work in progress.

The Mushroom Kingdom (and surrounding kingdoms, islands, etc) are stated to exist on the Mushroom World. It is also established in the Mario Tennis games that there is permanent, commercial travel to the Mushroom World from Earth (and vice versa) though a portal in the sky. It can be assumed that this connection has been around for a while, hence the similarities between the two planets (eg use of the Gregorian calendar on the Mushroom World).

In the instruction manual for Wario Blast featuring Bomber-Man!, it is established that Wario has travelled to the Bomber-Man universe, thus none of the events in that franchise will be featured here (excluding said game).

In Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, it is established that the Mario and Sonic characters travel from their respective worlds, to Earth. Since Sonic is established to take place on a variant of Earth very different to Earth in the Mario games, it is assumed that the Sonic characters travel from their universe, to the Mario universe. Thus, that franchise will not be featured here.

Mario can be seen as a referee in Punch-Out!!, therefore that franchise is included here.

Rainbow Man is a multiversal crossover between numerous franchises, including Punch-Out!! and Mario. Since Little Mac is helped to become fit enough to box again, then he participates in Fight Night Round 2, is is assumed that the events of Rainbow Man affect its respective franchises - however only franchises in the Mario universe will be documented. Furthermore, Little Mac's inclusion in Fight Night Round 2 warrants the inclusion of the Fight Night franchise. Thus, those games will be included in the timeline.

Characters from Final Fantasy appear in numerous Mario spinoff games, however due to it always being characters from different Final Fantasy settings and the nature of the Final Fantasy games, these are assumed to either be doppelgängers or extradimensional travellers. The same is true for Dragon Quest.

In SimCity (SNES) the Tokyo scenario features Bowser raging rampage in Tokyo, searching for Mario and Luigi. This lines up with the Mario timeline, as Bowser would be searching for Mario and Luigi in an attempt to stop a prophesy coming true. For this reason, the SimCity games are included on this timeline. Only SimCity games that feature scenarios will be featured.

Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix is a crossover between Mario and Dance Dance Revolution. This is the same situation as the Tetris crossovers. Thus, only DDR: MM will be included on the timeline.

Starfy from The Legendary Starfy appears in Super Princess Peach, and Wario appears in Densetsu no Starfy 3. Because of this, the Legendary Starfy games will be included.

There are numerous references to Sabre Wulf in the Donkey Kong franchise, as well as Donkey Kong references in Sabre Wulf (Game Bof Advance). Thus, the Sabre Wulf games will be included.

Numerous Mario characters appear in the crowd of one of the Kirby games, however the Kirby universe's depiction of Earth is in a nuclear winter. Since this is not the case for the Mario universe, the Kirby games are not included. There are canonically movies for Kirby and The Legendary Starfy in the Mario Universe, so perhaps Mario and co's popularity in the Mushroom World and on Earth warranted their inclusions in Kirby as a cameo.

Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach are playable characters in NBA Street V3. Thus, the NBA Street games will be included on this timeline.

Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach are playable characters in SSX 3. Thus, the SSX games will be included on this timeline.

Due to numerous EA Sports franchises now being included, the EA Sports games will all be included on this timeline.

Many Nintendo characters cameo in various Mario games, such as Link, Samus and Inklings. Due to the impossibility of their games happening in the Mario universe, they are assumed either doppelgängers or extradimensional travellers.

Miis appear in the Mario universe, as well as many other Nintendo games. Miis are a multiversal race across the Nintendo multiverse, so this does not warrant the inclusion of the Mii games.

Mario + Rabbids is a duology of games featuring crossovers between the Mario franchise and the Rabbids franchise. While the developers of the games stated they are canon to Rabbids, they also stated they are not canon to the Mario timeline. Thus, these games will not be included.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is a crossover between the Mario universe and the Paper Mario universe. The game establishes the Paper Mario universe as a pocket dimension inside of a book, though due to being a book it would be impossible to definitively place the Paper Mario games on this timeline. However, a separate section will be made for their timeline, and the games will be included directly before and after Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam on the simplified order.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is established in the instruction manual to be a parallel universe depicting the events of Super Mario Bros. It will be included on this timeline.

In Super NES Super Scope 6, there is a level where you play as Mario, being pursued by Lemmy Koopa. Thus, these games will be included on this timeline.

Conker from Conker and Banjo from Banjo-Kazooie appear in Diddy Kart Racing. Thus, the Conker and Banjo-Kazooie games will be included on this timeline.

Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle is a crossover between Excitebike and Mario. Thus, Excitebike will be included on this timeline.

Qix Game Boy) features Mario characters. Thus, Qix will be included in this timeline.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a reskin of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. Due to the nature of Super Mario Bros. 2, it can be assumed that both games take place in the Mario universe. Thus, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic will be included on the timeline.

A select few Tetris games have storylines following Mario characters. None of the other Tetris games have storylines, unless also being crossovers with other franchise. Thus, the Tetris/crossover games will be included on the timeline.

A few of the un-franchised games released by Nintendo (eg Golf for the NES) feature Mario and Luigi (among others). Thus, this genre of Nintendo games that include Mario universe characters will be included.

Due to the sheer amount of games released, often in relatively short spans of time (at least for the older games) simply placing vague games in their release year will not suffice. Because of this, unless stated otherwise, games will be placed on their release dates.

Super Mario Galaxy implies that Power Stars can grant eternal youth, which is possibly why the Mario characters are able to stay so young. This is not wholly the case for every Donkey Kong Character, since Cranky Kong is canonically Donkey Kong from the arcade game, and the current Donkey Kong is canonically Cranky Kong's grandson. This implies Donkey Kong Jr. is Donkey Kong III's father.

For now I've included adaptations/ports that I think are useful for a cohesive playthrough (eg Super Mario 64 DS before Super Mario 64 due to the Yoshi plotline), though I do think it's worth adding every remake of a game. I probably won't do plain reskins, but if something adds new (worthwhile) content then I'll add it

The movie is incompatible due to humans being unaware of the Mushroom World. I'd have to look into the show, though. From what I understand, it isn't canon, but I don't think anything contradicts?
Well, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show can kinda fit I guess, but the other DIC Cartoons are harder to fit in iirc

Also, I have written a huge theory / my take on the Two Marios / the Mario Timeline that I kinda like more & more. If I have time I'll look for it. I tried to reconcile Mario being born in the 80s... some things in there are a bit far fetched, but oh well. I only remember getting frustrated with including many other connected franchises... until I got to Captain N: The Game Master... anyways...

This may be interesting for this thread (it's posted for free on patreon, no membership needed ^^)
While watching this, I notice they place Punch-Out!! (arcade) in 1984 due to a newspaper. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! establishes itself as the first game in the series chronologically, which has a newspaper dated to 1987. I believe both of these are wrong, since basing off Mike Tyson's age in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, the game should take place in 1986. Also, I do need to move Mario & Sonic 2020 to the initial opening ceremony, not the postponed-due-to-covid one

Honestly, at the end when saying they "Just need a Michael Jordan to take them down a peg" I thought they'd cut to NBA Street V3. Surprised they didn't mention that, or SSX, to be honest.

Also, while the video was nice corroboration, I for the most part knew it already. I do disagree with a few things (from what I understood he seems to believe Mario/Luigi living in Brooklyn was retconned, for one thing). Overall, the video was still useful, though

I re-send this timeline as I think you'd like a 2nd view on the Mario Timeline.

https://seandwalsh.tumblr.com/timeline
I don't have time to read through it all right now, however I do appreciate the more thorough research they seem to have done, especially with the older games. TBH, those games (Game & Watch/Arcade/NES titles) will probably get shifted around a lot during the early days of this thread, so the references to the instruction manuals for some of those is quite helpful (particularly for Wrecking Crew)

Since this already has 3 EA Sports games, do people think I should group that into 1 franchise? It's basically that already, it'd just make this take longer to make. Though, I would be able to eliminate some colours, which is already a bit of an issue (why are there so many yellows and reds???)

Yeah, probably best to.

Diddy Kong Racing
Wouldn'tbit be more logical to place this before Banjo-Kazooie, cause iirc it was set before Banjo even met Kazooie? Or is that due to Dixie Kong's age in Diddy Kong Racing DS? If so, couldn't both games be very similar events happening twice on the timeline, one with Banjo & Conker, and one... after Conker was unfit for driving?

Speaking of Banjo-Kazooie, will ylu include Nuts'n'Bolts?

So, you go with the version where Mario was born in the 40s?
Yeah, seems pretty sound to me. Again, there's the theory that Power Stars extend youth-span which is IMO the most sound theory as to how they've been around so long based purely off evidence in Galaxy, so Mario and co being ~80 doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. What has been horrendous though, is dating Bananza.

At first I thought it was obviously a prequel since… well… Baby Pauline, and that we were playing as Cranky Kong/DK I. However Cranky Kong is in Bananza. And Diddy Kong. And Dixie Kong. Clearly DK III. Then I presumed it was a sequel to Odyssey and we were dealing with Pauline Jr (again, not that far-fetched - especially since it's established teen-Pauline has a grandmother who was also called Pauline), but after actually looking into the story of the game this didn't really sit well with me either. The biggest reason for this is the lack of red scaffolding around New Donk City, which has, since (presumably) Donkey Kong Arcade, been a staple of New Donk, meaning it would have to be a prequel… with Cranky Kong. So I'm pretty sure that the Donkey Kong aspects of New Donk were only really added once DK was well established as a hero, not a villain. This could very well be Bananza, since this would be DK's first global act of heroism. This also means teen-Pauline is Mayor Pauline, thus Mayor Pauline is not Lady from DK Arcade. This is supported by the fact that graffiti in Odyssey depict Lady as having blonde hair, not brown hair. This also doesn't create continuity issues with Odyssey, since Pauline is thankfully vague enough in describing the Kong-related event of her past as simply being kidnapped by a gorilla when they were younger, which would be just before Bananza (also supported by "younger" which probably wouldn't be used if Pauline used Power Stars to stay young - establishing Power Stars are mainly only used in the Mushroom Kingdom and Sarasa, as well as given out by people affiliated with the Mushroom Kingdom). This would imply that Lady is Pauline's grandmother, and there is an unseen generation between the two. Logistically, this Places Bananza in the mid-'90s to give Pauline enough time to age from 13 to adulthood by Mario vs Donkey Kong in 2004, while still allowing for Diddy Kong to begin dating Dixie Kong after the events of DK Country, and requires the unseen Pauline generation to most likely be born before DK Arcade (irrelevant to the overall timeline, just wanted to mention it). Due to Pauline's involvement in Mario vs Donkey Kong, which takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, they most likely start receiving Power Stars around this time, which is how they appear the same age in Odyssey, as in MvDK, which occurs ~10 years prior - by being as generous as possible this would make Pauline 23 in MvDK and 35 in Odyssey, thus requiring Power Stars to be used. Based on the fact Pauline seems to be used to adult-life by MvDK (and the fact that DK becomes infatuated with her - which is strange now that he knew her when she was 13 and he was fully matured, but this is what happens when you try and make prequels that misalign with very specific spin-off franchises) I'm assuming Bananza is at least a month after Country, to give Diddy and Dixie enough time to start dating.

The one game that tried to fix the DK timeline ended up nearly breaking it, ironic

Reading back, I kinda just go on a massive tangent for no reason - it made sense in my head, though is probably better suited as its own message

Honestly, I based a lot of this off a 5 hour timeline video, and they went into detail about any placement that may be disagreed upon. I'll have to check, though there were much smaller things that didn't get oversights in that video

They have DKRacing where it is since Tiny Kong has just matured by this time. I also don't see any reason to assume Banjo and Kazooie haven't met yet, one of them just isn't absent in the game

Hm, two things. First, I am more convinced that Bananza is set some years after Oddyssey. Weak evidence, yeah, but the New Donk License Plates have the year 2025 on them (in Oddyssey it was 1981, though I highly doubt that's the imtended year, just has to be some time later). I take this for Bananza to take place in 2025+, and Pauline in that game is either the daughter or granddaughter of Mayor Pauline. The latter's kidnapping by a Kong was seen in Donkey Kong for the GB. Yes, I think that Lady ≠ Mayor Pauline ≠ Young Pauline. More on that when I finally translate from german / write out my personal Mario headcanon.

Secondly, I'm not convinced that Mario ages slower. I think all his adventures took place from 1980/1981 (to reconcile the Mario is 24/25 statement from 2005) to present day. Works kinda well... mostly. SimCity's 1961 Bowser in Tokyo gave me a headache. Yeah, even though I did not like the two Marios theory at first, there is some stuff that actually works better that way, so it's at the moment my headcanon. Sorry to not go into more detail, I'll give a more detailed answer another time ^^

They have DKRacing where it is since Tiny Kong has just matured by this time. I also don't see any reason to assume Banjo and Kazooie haven't met yet, one of them just isn't absent in the game
It's actually from Banjo's official description:
Even before the start of his future partnership with Kazooie, Banjo isn't one to turn down the chance of an adventure. So when Squawks brings the message from his pal Diddy Kong, the Honey Bear stuffs a few things into his trusty backpack and takes to his heels.
