In general I think it makes more sense to just use the Remakes wholesale, since they usually have all the original's content as well as new stuff. Most franchises always take the remakes as the canon version going forward so I feel like it makes sense to just use those, it's also just simpler than switching from the original to the remake for the bonus content

What do you think about the theory that Mario 3D Land takes place before Mario 3? I'm mixed on it. The super leaf tree probably could just drop the tanuki leaves every year so it wouldn't necessarily need to be the first time in 3D Land. But the game feels like it's meant to be set earlier in the timeline because Bowser uses Arcade DK moves like throwing barrels. Also in Odyssey we see the Super Leaf tree still doesn't have leaves, almost as if Nintendo is trying to say they didn't grow back or something. Idk I could go either way on it

This honestly doesn’t feel like the best way to deduce its timeline placement. Though, Mario games (mostly the kart ones, but still) feature the leaf power up despite obligatorily taking place after Mario 3. Perhaps there are more trees than just the Tail Tree in 3D Land that create the Tanuki leaves (I’m also aware there is another leaf power up, presumably from a tree of the same/similar species implying there’s more than 1 tree anyway).

Still, if the options are either assuming there’s more trees or placing 3D Land where the bulk of the leaves appear, yeah that other theory seems pretty sound

Well the idea would be 3D Land shows the tree getting it's leaves blown off and the powerups scattering around the mushroom kingdom. Which would allow the leaves to appear in other games afterwards with them already spread around.

I'm wondering about what the exact list of noncanon games would be.

Currently I can only think of the Rabbids games and Smash Bros, those are both confirmed noncanon but is there anything else? Should Mario teaches typing be canon?

Mario Teaches Typing has no story and is canonically not actually Mario, anyway. Any game that has little to no story or has no gameplay involved (eg I am a Teacher: Super Mario Sweater) I won’t include

Why didn't the guy in the video include it?
It wasn’t developed by Nintendo, and doesn’t have the Nintendo “seal of approval” a lot of non-Nintendo games with Nintendo characters had. It’s still an official Mario game, it just wasn’t developed or published by Nintendo, but Nintendo fully allowed the game to be produced and released officially

Wait it's canonically not mario? How?

Ehhh that does kinda put it in a gray area. They didn't work on the game at all, just allowed it to be released. It's obvious Nintendo doesn't really like stuff like that anymore it's why they're so protective over their characters now

This is also a highly subjective question. A lot of people only consider the mainline games to be canon, for example. Some people consider every game to be canon to itself and itself only (and any direct story-following sequels/prequels is may have). Though, I don’t see any reason to not include games simply because they aren’t a staple of the series. My least favourite example of people only considering staples of a franchise as canon is movie company shared universe theories. AFAIK I am the only person on the internet to have a full(ish) Pixar Theory, and Film Theory’s Disney & Dreamworks shared universe theories also only include the main movies (though not direct-to-video movies?)… but only when they don’t feel like it, since they’ll use expanded media to place things if they have nothing else to go off which is… I hate that idea. I went on a bit of a rant at Film Theory there, but I am strongly against that method of theorising

Again, licensing and Nintendo currently not liking crossovers does not reflect the timeline, especially when some connections have gone both ways
