I would say no just limit him to normal telepathy and some telkinetic ability but they should make him a trained black op.

I think the virus could be government made and they use Cable to stop it when he does they lock him up because he knows the truth behind it and while on the mission of stopping it he contracts it but he uses his telekinetic powers to stop it from taking him completely...

It's the first time I've every actually just thought a character was cool and payed no attention to the mythology whatsoever... I think a lot of people feel the same way... They could do whatever they wanted to his origins and no one would complain...

Gambit's background is shady isn't it so his origins couldn't ever really be messed with but as far as I know aren't they going the 616 way right now anyway?
